Project: Former All Saints' Hospital
Location: Eastbourne, East Sussex
Client: Berkeley Homes (Southern) Ltd
Consultants: OSP Architects
The spectacular Grade 2* listed former convent hospital and chapel on the seafront just west of Eastbourne has been granted planning consent for conversion to residential use. The conversion involves the retention of the listed buildings as well as the creation of a new public park and the construction of three new apartment blocks within the eastern part of the site.
Landscape Perspective was appointed to develop the detailed landscape design and to discharge the landscape planning conditions. The landscape proposals for the listed buildings are based on a traditional design with a cloistered courtyard, formal terraces and gardens.
The Park provides a valuable local amenity and re-connects the existing residential areas to the north of the former hospital with the seafront. The design for the Park is bold in its ambitions in order to create an attractive but manageable setting for the listed buildings. It features a large circular lawn surrounded by trees and swathes of spring bulbs. A path encircles the lawn and leads through an amphitheatre with planted terraces to the seafront.
