Guildford Plaza is a commercial development occupying a prominent position on a brown field site close to the city centre.  Although the proposal had been the subject of extensive pre-planning negotiations with the local Council it was refused planning consent.  One of the grounds for refusal was the perceived practical difficulties of tree planting in close proximity to the new building and the ability for trees to thrive in this situation.

The client decided to appeal the decision and approached Landscape Perspective to assist in resolving the issues concerning tree planting.  Landscape Perspective opened up a dialogue with the Tree Officer which resulted in a change of tree species to more columnar or fastigiate trees, preparation of details to demonstrate adequate space for root development, and the introduction of a management regime to ensure the long term health and vigour of the trees.

A proof of evidence was prepared by Landscape Perspective and based on this the Council withdrew its reason for objection relating to tree planting in advance of the appeal hearing.  The appeal was subsequently upheld and planning consent was granted in February 2008.
