Landscape Perspective worked together with Orbit Architects to secure planning permission in January 2008 for additional student accommodation (382 plus units) for the University of Winchester on the site of former nurses accommodation.
The site is steeply sloping, rising from 65m in the south to 82m in the north, which requires both the landscape and the buildings to step up the hill in a number of stages to allow access into the cores at different levels. The proposed buildings sit either side of a large central linear open space, which will provide an amenity for the students as well as pedestrian access to the cores at ground level.
The landscape concept for the central open space echoes the formality of the buildings, creating a series of steps and retaining walls, grass banks and planted terraces, and paved piazzas with new tree planting and seating outside each of the cores with plenty of circulation space.
